When writing or updating your will, we strongly recommend you seek professional legal advice. You can include the TLC in your existing Will by adding a codicil, which must be signed and witnessed by two people over the age of 18. We also recommend you inform your family about your wishes.
Should you decide to nominate the TLC as a beneficiary, you can specify exactly how the funds should be used, such as a Foundation Fund, to provide ongoing financial support for TLC’s reserve management or to facilitate the purchase of a new reserve. Please be sure to check with us to make sure your gift can be used as intended.
Suggested wording to make a bequest to TLC in your Will
I GIVE [insert the details of the bequest here] free from all debts (secured and unsecured) and all duties (whether federal or state) payable in respect of my estate to the Tasmanian Land Conservancy Inc. (Registration Number IA08282) and I DECLARE that a receipt of the Secretary or the Treasurer for the time being of the said Tasmanian Land Conservancy Inc. shall be a full and sufficient discharge of this bequest to my executor(s).
Ways to make a Bequest to TLC
The four most effective ways to leave TLC a bequest are:
1.A residual bequest
After making provision for family and friends and any debts, you can choose to leave the residue (remainder) to the TLC. This is a simple and popular way to support a charity.
2. A percentage
This allows for percentages of your estate to be granted to beneficiaries, thereby overcoming the requirement to keep the Will up to date with changes in the value of the entire estate assets and liabilities.
3. Gift of property
Specific items such as works of art, stocks and shares, antiques and land can be gifted in your Will. Please ensure gifts of land in particular are accompanied by a power for TLC to sell the land, unless you have discussed the gift with us first, because sometimes it is extremely costly to hold and manage land.
4. A specific cash sum
This method is valued but may reduce the net present value of the gift over the years through inflation.
