Having travelled beyond Tasmania, we have seen firsthand the growing pressure many landscapes are under. That makes what is happening here feel even more special. Tasmania is one of the few places where people from all walks of life are increasingly coming together with a shared goal: protecting our unique plants, animals and wild places for future generations.
That is something we believe is worth investing in.
We chose to establish a fund in the TLC Foundation because we wanted to support the long-term success of the TLC’s work. For us, the Foundation is an important part of that, helping sustain and strengthen existing conservation projects while also creating opportunities for new projects as they arise.
We see conservation science and the practical care of reserves as going hand in hand. One of the real strengths of the TLC is that it invests in its own research, so decisions are guided by evidence and by a clear understanding of what will deliver the best conservation outcomes.
Protecting land is only the beginning. Nature is constantly changing, and landscapes need ongoing care. There is not always a perfect blueprint either – sometimes the best approach is to try something, learn from it and adapt along the way.
Success also depends on people. Relationships matter, as does the shared knowledge and commitment they bring. Restoring and protecting nature takes time, patience and persistence.
We are only a small piece of the puzzle, but we want to play our part well. Through our fund, we hope the land already being protected stays protected, that new areas with important environmental values can be brought into the conservation network, and that these landscapes are given the best chance of thriving in a changing climate.
For us, it is not just about preserving what we have today, but about building resilient landscapes that can adapt to whatever challenges the future may bring.
