Sam Hignett, born and educated in Adelaide, then London, chose to live in Hobart and had a deep love of Tasmanian plants and wildlife. Much of Sam’s artworks were dedicated to capturing the unique nature of the Tasmanian wilderness and educating others about the amazing natural world that is at our doorsteps.

In all things that Sam did, whether as an artist, a school teacher, a traveller or as an incredibly generous friend and supporter, she was stubbornly determined to celebrate life, love, family and nature. Sam is deeply missed by her wide range of friends, colleagues, friends, family and partner, and her laughter, dedication, knowledge, joy of life, and sense of wonder are remembered with love. Sam’s absence continues to leave a gaping hole in our lives.

Sam’s loved ones requested that wherever possible, the funds be used for the purposes of education through art and science and that the Fund should be used to support these two outcomes as they were close to Sam’s heart. Such projects may include but are not exclusive to:

  • Education of the public and school groups on issues related to Tasmanian wildlife and plants;
  • Supporting artist projects that specifically aim to study or illustrate Tasmanian wildlife, plants and birds;
  • Ongoing scientific study of wilderness areas; and
  • Ongoing maintenance to support conservation efforts of the Tasmanian Land Conservancy’s reserves.
