Steane Family Fund

The Steane family fund was established with the purchase of an 18-hectare revolving fund property at Spring Beach, Orford, now christened, “Refugium” as a place of peace and refuge for people and the relic east coast bush on the property.

The Steane family has had a connection with this block since the 1970s when it was purchased by Douglas and Patricia Steane, whose ashes are now scattered around the bush there. Since the original purchase, the property has been expanded and has changed hands a couple of times, but now it is back in the family with a nature covenant protecting its natural values into the future.

This block forms part of a chain of reserved properties that link the native forests of the Thumbs to the coast. The ever-present pressure of development makes Refugium a valuable sanctuary for the animals and plants that call it home.  We look forward to continuing the care and stewardship of this unique property.
